Portugal 2016

What:  We work with our International Board Missionaries of the SBC in Northern Portugal, Andy & Michelle Milam. They live in the Maia/Porto area, and Andy works with the entire region. This area has less than 2% evangelical Christians. He has invited us to consider partnering with a Baptist Church there for the next several years.

Where:   The city of Viana do Castelo is a smaller city on the Northwest coast of Portugal. It is located 45 minutes from the International Airport. It is a very old fishing port city of 36.000 people in an area of 88,000 people. There is a smaller Baptist Church there and a wonderful pastor, Jorge Max (Brazilian), wife and family. He has a great challenge in reaching this region with the gospel. Please see the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpZjBPelphY about the city. And please go to Wikipedia to read more about this place.

When: We would leave the states on May 6th and arrive there on May 7th and leave there on May 15th and arrive back the same day. We are looking at a vision trip, prayer walking and teaching English in 3 levels. There may be a 2nd trip planned in the Fall, 2016 with more trips to this city in the coming years when the partnership is finalized.

Costs:   Right now, we are looking at a total of $2750 for round trip airfare, lodging (double occupancy), ground transportation and all meals in country. Any souvenirs and tourist things are extra. Additionally you are responsible for having a valid passport (expiration date of no later than 6 months prior to our return date) and meals in airports while traveling. We hope to leave on a Friday and arrive there on a Saturday and return on the following Sunday. We would have 8 nights in a hotel there. There is a $1025 non-refundable for any reason deposit, and 3 additional monthly payments of $575 each for the total amount. Should you purchase you own tickets or use airline miles, then you would pay the non-refundable deposit amount only.

Who:   Committed Christians who have a heart for the Lord and desire to share their faith in an informal way using English as a 2nd language and other skills. Those who want to reach our own city, country and the world with the gospel.   You should have good physical health and be able to walk 4-6 miles per day if necessary. Everyone should have an up to date tetanus shot.

Meetings:   Group informational meetings are required and you must attend 80% of them. They are scheduled by the group and the leader together. Also we require all participants to attend two trainings:  Child Protection and Contingency Training.
